Coffee Filter Christmas Tree Ornaments Ideas and How to Make Them

These coffee filter Christmas tree ornaments are simple, engaging and perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. Using plain paper coffee filters, a few jewels and basic craft supplies, children can create delicate, colorful tree ornaments while practicing fine motor skills and exploring how water carries and blends color.

This activity is both creative and educational: children discover absorption and color mixing as they drip and brush colored water onto the filters, and they develop hand-eye coordination and finger strength when adding small craft gems.

The kids also love adding sparkle — craft jewels give each ornament a festive finish and offer great practice for pincer grasp and placement skills.

This is our second coffee filter project in a short time; the same dyeing technique works for many styles of ornaments. The process is forgiving and suited to young children, so it’s a wonderful group activity for preschool settings or holiday playtime at home.

Supplies:

Note: a few items shown may be optional depending on what you have at home.

  • Ice cube tray or several small containers for water
  • Food coloring and/or liquid watercolors (various shades of green and blue work well)
  • Coffee filters
  • Craft jewels or sequins
  • Small paintbrush for applying color or glue
  • White glue or school glue
  • Hole punch
  • Thread, ribbon or thin cord for hanging

To protect surfaces, we worked on a plastic tablecloth and set the ice cube tray inside a shallow baking pan to prevent spills.

Instructions

1. Prepare your dye: put a little water in each compartment of an ice cube tray (you want concentrated color). Add a few drops of food coloring or liquid watercolor to create different shades. For added variety, mix two colors in some compartments so kids can see color blending in action.

2. Dye the filters: let children drip, brush or gently tap the colored water onto the coffee filters. Some children enjoy scrunching a filter and dunking it into the dye; others like to paint patterns. If the color looks faint, add a few drops directly onto the wet filter and let kids swirl it to intensify the hues.

3. Dry the filters: lay the filters flat on a baking sheet to air dry, or use a hair dryer to speed the process. Make sure they are completely dry before folding and decorating to avoid tearing.

Shaping and decorating

4. Fold the dry filter: fold each filter accordion-style — fold in half, then in half again. No need to be exact; slightly uneven layers create a more natural tree shape.

5. Secure with glue: add a small amount of glue between the layers to hold the folds in place. Older children can help apply the glue while younger ones may prefer to press the layers together while an adult secures them.

6. Add jewels and embellishments: brush glue onto the filter layers or the jewels and press decorations in place. Placing small gems is excellent fine-motor practice — many children enjoy arranging each jewel exactly where they want it.

7. Finish and hang: once the glue is dry, punch a hole near the top of each tree and thread a loop of thread or ribbon for hanging. The result is a lightweight, colorful ornament that looks lovely on a tree or as part of a festive display.
