Saturdays at the Ogden Farmer's Market on Historic 25th Street

Our family loves shopping for weekly produce at the market because it’s fresh and local. The selection is best early in the morning, so arrive soon after opening for the best variety. On a recent visit we picked up a bucket of pitted cherries—perfect for topping a no-bake cheesecake—and some dried tart cherries that were absolutely delicious.

We also grabbed apricots for my husband, fresh raspberries for the kids, and a container of microgreens for myself. Microgreens are tiny, nutrient-dense greens grown just beyond sprouting—crisp and flavorful as salad toppers, garnishes, or in sandwiches. Talking with the growers is one of the best parts of farmers markets—on this day we met someone who’s been growing microgreens for over 30 years. Other vendors were offering fragrant basil, peas, kale, and arugula; I chose kale and arugula for salads and sandwiches.

Local artisans bring beautiful handmade items to the market. I especially admired the pottery—glazed bowls and serving pieces that would brighten any food photo or dinner table.

I’d been thinking about adding succulents to our collection as an easy-to-care-for plant for the kids. We found a booth selling a variety of succulents shipped in from Hawaii and California, planted in fun pots and macramé hangers. Succulents are a great beginner plant and a nice, low-maintenance option for a patio or indoor plant shelf.

With recent record-high temperatures, everyone was ready for something cold after an hour of wandering. The kids enjoyed shaved ice while my husband and I found a beverage truck that makes drinks by hand using only fruit, vegetables, water, and herbs. Everything is juiced and shaken in mason jars—no fancy equipment.

We shared a Hydration Smoothie made with mango, banana, and coconut water, and chose stevia instead of sugar. The vendor also offered a sample of a ginger shot they’re developing—surprisingly pleasant with a spicy finish. The drink was refreshing and hit the spot on a hot day.

One of our favorite nearby restaurants, Thai Curry Kitchen, often sets up a booth at the market. Their menu is mostly gluten-free and dairy-free, with vegan options available. They do use tamari (a gluten-free soy sauce), so many dishes contain soy; the Cucumber Coconut Salad and Green Papaya Salad are two soy-free choices. If you have dietary restrictions, tell them and ask about toppings like fried shallots, which they keep separate upon request. My favorite is the Green Chicken Curry.

Kids love hunting for the painted horses scattered around town, and you’ll find plenty of public art to enjoy while wandering 25th Street.

One standout piece of public art is a piano painted with a Beatles tribute—just one of the many creative touches that make a stroll down Historic 25th Street so entertaining.

This is the most creatively painted piano I've ever seen!

Local flower farmers offered beautiful bouquets, and a honey vendor sold raw Utah honey that many local families use to help with seasonal allergies.

Tips for Visiting Farmers Markets with Dietary Restrictions

  1. Select produce from the back of the display to reduce the chance many hands have touched the items you choose.
  2. Ask questions when buying prepared foods. Vendors work in small spaces and may find it difficult to completely avoid cross-contamination even if they offer gluten-free options.
  3. If a vendor seems knowledgeable and careful—like the Thai Curry Kitchen—don’t hesitate to ask specifics about ingredients and preparation to ensure it’s safe for your needs.
  4. Be cautious with items like jams and jellies, which are often made in shared kitchens and can be cross-contaminated. Use your discretion.
  5. If you bring children with food restrictions, keep an eye on them since there are often samples available that may contain allergens.
  6. Enjoy exploring different types of produce—kids may see fruits and vegetables they’ve never encountered before, and it’s a fun way to try something new together.
  7. Arrive early to avoid crowds and get the best selection.
