WAIMEA, HI
Californian cuisine with Hawaiian influence, casual; gluten-free menu
The Hale Kai Restaurant sits just steps from the pool on the grounds of The Fairmont Orchid resort, offering ocean views and options for outdoor, al fresco dining. The atmosphere is relaxed and casual. During our visit, the server demonstrated good knowledge of celiac disease and cross-contamination concerns, and when unsure about an ingredient she promptly checked with the kitchen.
The kitchen was attentive and went out of its way to ensure items shared at the table were prepared gluten-free. The menu is varied, featuring creative takes on familiar dishes so there’s something to please most diners, including those needing gluten-free options.
Items we sampled included fresh chips and salsa, vegetable summer rolls with tofu and avocado accompanied by a chili sauce, macadamia nut hummus served with purple sweet potato chips, lobster fried rice, kale and sweet potato tacos, and steak frites. Each dish showed thoughtful preparation and a balance of local Hawaiian flavors with Californian influences.
