Southern Chess Pie ♟️
For a straightforward home-baked dessert that feels special, try a Southern blackberry lemon chess pie. Its sweet custard filling brightened with lemon and topped with juicy blackberries makes a simple dessert taste elegant.
Although I’m not from the South, I’ve come to appreciate Southern home cooking and the charm of classic desserts like this one.
The name “chess pie” often raises questions. It doesn’t resemble a chessboard, so the origin of the title is a bit of a mystery.

There are a few common theories about how chess pie got its name:
- It may have started as “cheese pie,” which over time became “chess pie.”
- Another idea is that pies were stored in a pie chest before refrigeration, so “chest pie” evolved into “chess pie.”
- Some say it could have come from Chester, England, with “Chester pie” eventually shortened to “chess pie.”
Regardless of which story is correct, the name stuck and now refers to a beloved Southern custard-style pie.

When you bite into this pie you’ll notice the smooth, sweet custard balanced by bright lemon zest and juice. Fresh blackberries are optional but they add color, texture, and a pleasant tart contrast that elevates each slice.
This pie is especially enjoyable chilled, making it a refreshing choice on warm days. It’s a simple recipe with impressive results, perfect for everyday family desserts or for sharing at gatherings.
