Dear Dollar Stretcher,
Does anyone have ideas on how to get a husband to stop spending? He stops for lunch, coffee, donuts, soda, etc., almost daily and shrugs, “I only spent $10.” He won’t help with bills or planning but wants things now.

We paid cash for a small camper last summer planning to keep it for a few years, but now he wants a newer, bigger camper. We’ve talked about buying one next spring and could pay cash if spending stopped. We also want to pay off one credit card, a car loan, the mortgage, and a small home improvement loan, but we never seem to have extra to put toward them.

Any advice?
Tanya

Motivational Reading

Some readers have found that eye-opening personal finance books can change spending habits. One wrote that after her husband read a classic money-management book, he drastically altered his behavior. Loan copies from the library can be a low-cost way to introduce new perspectives.

Goal Oriented

Getting a spender to commit often means connecting saving to goals they care about. Ask what your partner wants and build a budget that includes his goals alongside yours. Make sure the plan isn’t so restrictive that he feels controlled. Consider agreeing to lock up credit cards and switch to a cash-based system for daily spending. Involve him in creating the budget and in tracking progress so he feels ownership.

Budget Reinforcement

Many readers report success by setting clear shared goals and a flexible budget. Let your partner have input and include small, enjoyable expenses so he doesn’t feel deprived. Track progress together and show how everyday purchases add up over weeks and months. Keep the tone supportive — celebrate milestones and use progress to motivate continued good choices.

One reader described sitting down calmly with his spouse, listing mutual goals (house, education, vacations) and assigning dollar targets. Including the spender in monthly summaries helped build commitment and change habits over time.

All Cash

Switching to a cash-only system for daily spending is a common recommendation. Allocate a weekly allowance for small purchases and remove easy access to credit or debit cards for incidental spending. When the allowance is spent, no more purchases are allowed until the next period. This method limits impulse spending and makes the cost of small purchases more visible.

Save It Yourself!

Give your partner a concrete incentive: have him set aside money for a specific item he wants. One reader suggested a lunch-money jar where any unspent daily allowance goes toward a goal like a new camper. This encourages creativity with meals and lets him see progress toward his personal reward while still participating in the household plan.

Quicken Helps

Tracking finances with software or an app can make the impact of spending clearer. One reader used personal finance software to run debt-reduction scenarios that revealed large interest savings from paying off debts sooner. Seeing the potential savings helped convince a once-spendthrift spouse to change course.

Starter Help

For partners who repeat small impulse purchases, practical interventions can help. Pack lunches, stock a cooler with snacks, or keep inexpensive alternatives at work so convenience stops are less tempting. Calculate the monthly and yearly cost of small daily purchases to show how quickly they add up toward a goal.

Also try a reward system: let your spouse keep a portion of monthly savings to spend on something fun. Gradual change with positive reinforcement often works better than strict prohibition.

Third-Party Reinforcement

Sometimes hearing the facts from an outside expert helps. Several readers recommended workshops, community college classes, or counseling focused on money management. A neutral instructor can explain interest costs and debt consequences in a way that resonates. One couple paid for a class together and used what they learned to pay off credit cards and start saving.
