What is the 30 day keto cleanup challenge?

Many readers have asked for accountability and support to either get started with keto or low carb, find moral support from others following the same path, or refine and improve the plan they are already using. To meet that need, we launched the first 30 Day Keto Cleanup Challenge in July 2020.

The challenge was well received and many participants asked for more. Because producing these challenges takes time, I now run them every other month with a break in November—about five months each year. This schedule gives you one focused month of tracking and accountability, followed by a month to relax and implement changes before the next round.

Personally, the challenges have helped me too: since the July 2020 challenge I have lost 26 pounds and have maintained that progress as of January 2021. The next #30dayketocleanup Challenge will start March 1, 2021.

How Can I join the Challenge?

Not everyone follows the same social platforms, so I offer several ways to participate. Here’s the process we used in July, with a few improvements made later:

  1. Download the 30 Day Keto Cleanup Progress Tracker sheet (see the end of the post). Downloading the tracker signs you up for the “Joined the Challenge” email list so you receive messages specific to the 30 Day Keto Challenge.
  2. You will be offered the Getting Started Package at a low cost. It includes a 7-day menu plan and helpful tools. If you already have a keto plan you like, you can continue using it—this package is optional.
  3. During the challenge I post daily on Instagram with meal examples and progress updates using the hashtag #30dayketocleanup. Follow the hashtag to see posts from the challenge. I also post on my Instagram account.
  4. If you use Facebook, I post daily challenge updates on my Facebook Page as well.
  5. Members of my Facebook group for women will find a daily thread there where they can join the conversation and share progress.

Do I have to follow a certain food plan?

No. You should follow the approach that best fits your lifestyle, budget, and goals. If you are new to keto or feel stuck, consider the affordable Getting Started Package—it provides a simple 7-day plan and practical tools to kick things off. If you already have a plan that works, stick with it.

Because this is a CLEANUP challenge, here are a few suggestions to maximize your results:

  • Track your food each day during the 30 days. Use a free tracker like MyFitnessPal or CarbManager, or use a paper tracker from the Free Resource Library, or simply record meals on a sheet of paper.
  • Take starting weight and measurements and record them on the 30 Day Progress Tracker.
  • Choose at least one food or food category to eliminate or reduce for the 30 days. Common targets include nuts, heavy cream (which can stall weight loss), processed keto snacks, or alcohol. If you worry you can’t live without a specific item for 30 days, that’s often the best one to work on eliminating.

If you find me on Facebook or Instagram, look for #30dayketocleanup posts and join in. I welcome support and feedback—this challenge works best when we encourage each other.
